FAQs

What level of coffee bean roasting is recommended for cold brew?

Medium-dark to dark-roast beans are recommended for efficient extraction. Light-roasted or medium-roasted beans may not produce fully extracted coffee.

What level of coffee bean grinding is recommended for cold brew?

Medium-coarse to coarse-ground coffee is recommended. Set the grinder to produce particles in the range of 1.0~1.6mm, or follow the recommended settings for French Press or Cold Brew as suggested by the grinder manufacturers.

What kind of water is recommended for cold brew?

Since most of your coffee is water, it is essential to use the correct type of water for optimal results. Use filtered water and avoid using tap water or well water, as they may contain minerals that can affect the taste of the coffee.

How much coffee and water do I use with the Cold Brew System?

Add 100g (3.5oz) of coffee to the coffee filter (there is a 3.5oz mark on the surface of the filter) and add 700ml of water to the jar, or fill the water up to the “MAX” mark on the glass jar to produce 500~550g of cold brew concentrate.

100g coffee + 700g water = 500g concentrate

What are the dilution guidelines for Shelbru concentrate?

As a rule of thumb, we suggest using 1 part concentrate and 4 parts water or milk.

Feel free to adjust the dilution ratio to suit your preference! For concentrates with higher TDS values like Coffee & Chicory, you can dilute with water/milk on a 1:5~1:6 ratio.

For lower TDS value concentrates you can dilute with water/milk 1:3 ratio.

Nice Step Up For My Cold Brew

I've been making cold brew coffee concentrate since 2014 with the Filtron system... lately I have been having issues finding big enough filter papers. During Covid, the company did not sell them or the filter pads, but I found alternatives. Now after 10 years the plastic brew system is bulky and stained and needing replacement with a simpler system... Most of the current cold brew systems are not made for making concentrated coffee... Then I found Shelbru.. .and SO GLAD I DID... it makes a lovely concentrate which I can use in the same proportions as in the past (old brain doesn't have to remember new ratios) and the coffee is perfect!! The only down side is that the jars are the same size, top to bottom, and I am afraid I might drop it if the glass is wet with water or condensation after I take it from the fridge. Has anyone else had this issue and what did you use to resolve this... I was thinking some kind of wide rubber or silicone wrapper or band.... but not sure where to find one... they are not sold at the company's site.

Not a real coffee lover; love this little cold brew

I’ve been using this cold brewer for eight months. It’s holding up well. I’m not that crazy about coffee. Used to be that I didn’t like it at all, not even the smell. But I guess taste and nose buds can change. I drink decaf due to caffeine issues. If I drink regularly brewed decaf coffee more than a couple of days in a row, it really starts to bother my stomach - probably the acidity. Cold brew coffee seems to be much easier on my tummy, even when I drink it every day, although I’m not at all sure that regular coffee drinkers would consider what I drink as “coffee.” My decaf coffees are more like coffee and vanilla flavored milk.
This cold brewing system works perfectly for me. Easy to clean. Doesn’t take up much space. When the cold brew in the fridge gets low, I start a new batch in the other container. So easy with this system.
Did some experimenting, and here’s what works for me:
1.25 cups coarse ground medium-dark roast decaf breakfast blend (I really like Fred Meyer Javatopia).
Slowly pour water into filter until about 1/4-1/2 inch from top of brewing container.
In fridge, 20 hours, or on counter top, 16 hours.
To make my “coffee:”
9 oz cold milk
3 oz cold brew
2 tbsp cold sugar free vanilla syrup

Usually I drink it cold, but sometimes I throw it in the microwave to heat it up. Other times I throw about half of it in the blender for about 45 seconds and then pour it back into rest of the cold brew for a frothy, yummy treat. Maybe that qualifies as a latte(?), although it’s not as pretty as a barista would create.
If we’re traveling somewhere for a few days, I mix up a bunch of this brew and put it in an empty milk jug to take with us in a cooler - easy way to have exactly what I want to drink and have enough to share.
I bought a second Shelbru for my older daughter, and she loves it too, although she makes “real” coffee with it.

Cold Brew Maker that you can use for years

I purchased the first iteration of the product two years ago and had to repurchase their new version as soon as I got their email about this launch. I'm impressed by the improvements that were made - sturdier filter, upgraded look and feel, and added measurement marks on the glass just to name a few.
This cold brew maker has been my staple! I get about 10 cups of coffee out of each brew, it tastes super smooth, and the two-piece brewer and carafe set idea is ingenious. The gift box is also a really nice touch. Sturdy, sleek looking box that I'm definitely going to reuse for something else. It's too nice to throw away!

Life changing

This product is absolutely incredible. I received it as a gift and use it daily so I always have freshly made cold brew. It doesn’t come with very specific instructions but on the listing it tells you. Make sure to sure coarse grind for the coffee and fill it up to the line that is on the side of the filter. About 3.5oz and then slowly top off with water and let brew for at least 12 hours. Makes the perfect cup of coffee for me every time.
