General

What are Shelbru products made of?

All Shelbru products are made of BPA-free, food-grade, and lead-free materials.

ABS for lids, food-grade silicon for spouts and gaskets, SUS304 stainless steel for the dual filter for the Brewer, sieve filters for the Sifter, and lead-free borosilicate glass.

What approvals and certificates do Shelbru products have?

All Shelbru products are compliant, approved, or certified for various safety, EMC, and food safety standards where applicable including USFDA(USA) / MHLW(Japan) / KFDA (Korea) food safety for all products, FCC/CE/KC for the Smart Canister.

Do Shelbru products have the same dimensions, allowing me to use the glass jars interchangeably?

Yes, you can use glass jars interchangeably among the Brewer, Carafe, and Smart Canister. The lids will fit on the Sifter, however, there will be some limitations. (i.e. Dual Filter will not fit with the Sifter jar.)

Cold Brew System

What level of coffee bean roasting is recommended for cold brew?

Medium-dark to dark-roast beans are recommended for efficient extraction. Light-roasted or medium-roasted beans may not produce fully extracted coffee.

What level of coffee bean grinding is recommended for cold brew?

Medium-coarse to coarse-ground coffee is recommended. Set the grinder to produce particles in the range of 1.0~1.6mm, or follow the recommended settings for French Press or Cold Brew as suggested by the grinder manufacturers.

What kind of water is recommended for cold brew?

Since most of your coffee is water, it is essential to use the correct type of water for optimal results. Use filtered water and avoid using tap water or well water, as they may contain minerals that can affect the taste of the coffee.

What is the recommended temperature of the water to use?

Water at room temperature is recommended. It is NOT recommended to use ice in the water.

What is the recommended brewing time with the Cold Brew System?

A general guideline is to brew for 12~24 hours depending on your preference. For optimal extraction, it is recommended to brew for at least 18 hours at room temperature.

How much coffee and water do I use with the Cold Brew System?

Add 100g (3.5oz) of coffee to the coffee filter (there is a 3.5oz mark on the surface of the filter) and add 700ml of water to the jar, or fill the water up to the “MAX” mark on the glass jar to produce 500~550g of cold brew concentrate.

100g coffee + 700g water = 500g concentrate

What TDS % do I get from Shelbru?

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) means how much coffee is in the water. TDS value varies depending on roasting level, grinding level, coffee-to-water ratio, and brew time. Dark (French) roasted coffee (Cafe Du Monde Coffee & Chicory) in 1:7 coffee: water ratio brewed for 24 hours produces TDS 10~11. Medium (City) roasted coffee produces TDS 3.5~3.8.

What are the dilution guidelines for Shelbru concentrate?

As a rule of thumb, we suggest using 1 part concentrate and 4 parts water or milk.

Feel free to adjust the dilution ratio to suit your preference! For concentrates with higher TDS values like Coffee & Chicory, you can dilute with water/milk on a 1:5~1:6 ratio.

For lower TDS value concentrates you can dilute with water/milk 1:3 ratio.

How do you clean the Dual Filter after the brew?

We recommend cleaning the filter immediately after you harvest a batch, as coffee contains oils that can clog the filter if not removed properly. Clean the filter gently using a soft sponge with detergent. If you're using the dishwasher, be sure to place it on the top-rack.

Smart Canister

What is the Smart Canister's battery size and charging time?

Shelbru Smart Canister uses a 1500mAh lithium-ion battery and takes 3~4 hours to fully charge.

How long does the Smart Canister battery last once fully charged?

The battery will last up to 4,000 hours in standby mode.

How many vacuum cycles does the Smart Canister perform from a fully charged battery?

You can perform approximately 330 vacuum cycles. If you perform one vacuum cycle every day, the battery can last for about 300 days theoretically. Considering re-vacuum cycles and standby consumption, you can expect the battery to last for 180~200 days.

How long does it take for the Smart Canister to complete one vacuum cycle?

It takes 15 seconds to complete one vacuum cycle. One vacuum cycle refers to the duration from when you press the button to when it reaches the preset pressure level, 20kPa, and stops the process.

Does the Smart Canister regulate the pressure level?

Yes, it monitors the pressure level in the container and automatically starts the vacuum process when it detects the pressure level has dropped below 20kPa.

Can I store ground coffee in the Smart Canister as well?

Yes, you can store ground coffee as well. However, be aware that when you release the vacuum, coffee particles may splash and adhere to the bottom of the lid. You can clean the bottom surface using a soft cloth or brush.

What else can I store in the Smart Canister?

In addition to coffee beans, you can store any dry food that is sensitive to oxygen and moisture. Examples include tea, nuts and seeds, dried fruits, grains and cereals, flour and baking ingredients, dried herbs and spices, snacks, pasta, and rice, etc.

Can I wash the Smart Canister lid in the water?

No, please do NOT submerge the lid in water or use a dishwasher, as the lid contains electronic circuits. Use a piece of soft cloth to gently wipe the surface, and you can use a small brush to clean the gasket area if needed.

Is there a filter that blocks particles from entering the Smart Canister vacuum system?

Yes, the Shelbru Smart Canister features a PERMANENT filter designed to protect the vacuum system. You can remove the silicon filter for washing and then reinstall it for reuse.

Sifter

Which coffee do I use after I sift coffee grounds with the Sifter?

After sifting coffee grounds using the Shelbru Sifter, the smaller particles that pass through the filter are typically discarded as they might affect the taste and quality of the brewed coffee. The larger particles that are caught by the filter are used for brewing coffee.

Which filter should I use with the Sifter?

You would use the appropriate filter based on your brewing method.

For Cold Brew or French Press, use the 800μm filter that comes pre-installed in the Shelbru Sifter. For Pour-over, switch to the 500μm filter provided with the Shelbru Sifter.

Make sure to select the correct filter to achieve the desired coffee grounds size for your chosen brewing method.
